106 trans
I just got a good deal on a cub 106 trans/axle. Will this trans fit other cubs? I am just wondering if narrow frame cubs such as 122, 100 if the trans that comes on them will fit all narrow frame models, and the same for the wide frame gear driven trans cubs, just trying to get a good understanding of how they all work,

The 106 trans had external brakes and will only fit cubs that have external brakes (every thing after the 104 including wide frames with a different shifter fork). The internal brake rears will fit the 70 thru 122.

The transmissions are interchangeable. I have an internal brake trans in a 106 and I see no reason why the external brake trans would not fit earlier narrow frames. The mounting holes and brake linkage all mount identically. Swapping parts between internal brake and external brake transmissions is a different story...

Not so sure I agree with everything in all of the above posts.
I've seen a number of Quiet Line series tractors with internal brakes (not sure who put them in there, but they were there never-the-less). I do believe that everything "hooks up" the same, internal or external. And yes, there may be issues with external brake transaxles in round fender tractors (70, 100, 71, 72, 73). |
My understanding is the Quietlines got the internal brake transmissions around the same time they switched to the 1 inch front spindles and 82 series style steering wheel. I'm thinking this happened in 78 but don't quote me on that. I know I bought a 79 1650 roller for parts that had all the above.

All of the gear drive rears are basically identical with the exception of brake configuration from 70-582. They can even be used on later 82 series tractors built by MTD. They were internal brake from the 70 through the 1x4/5 series, external brake from the 1x6/7 series until partway through the QL series, when they switched back to internal brakes. MTD went back to external brakes with the aluminum rearends.

I have a tranmission from a 122(internal brake) that is going in a 1250 that is being made into a puller. The shifter will not work unless it is replaced with one from a Ql series or is modified. The brake rod length may need to be changed as well.

My 1650 has 3/4" spindles and internal brakes. Looking at my sheet metal, though, I have found some 1450 decals beneath the 1650 decals in a couple spots, indicating that at some point somebody refurbished it and replaced some parts. The serial # on the frame indicates it is, in fact, a 1650, but I suppose the transaxle could have come from something else.
