106 Ammeter jump.
My ammeter jumps all over the place, especially at full throttle. I have had my 106 completely apart. Painted it, and took a dremel with a wire brush to all contacts. I have "dressed" the points in the voltage regulator. I still have a jumping (nervous) ammeter. It acted the same way before doing the above. Today, I found an ammeter at the flea market and swapped it out. Still jumpy. Took a digital voltmeter, and got over 14 volts steady at the battery. I am now at a loss as to what to try next. Hoping for some ideas. Otherwise, a terrific running 40 year old cub.
Thanks. Bill |
2 bad ammeters? That's a common failure mode for them.

I'm with Matt on that one......That's probably why it was at a flea market......

Jumpy ammeter
If you can get a cheapie at the auto parts store and hook it inline and see what happens. If its steady, you got your answer, and you'll have a spare.

I must remember to follow this thread. Mine does the same thing. VR tested fine. SG rebuilt. All conatacts cleaned. Same thing. The one thing I haven't tried is an new ammeter. Began to think it was just the nature of the beast.

I would make a suggestion to clean & polish all connections and terminals to the Voltage Regulator PLUS, make sure that the V/R has a good ground connection. There should be zero ohms resistance between the V/R foot (or case) to the battery negative terminal.

Mine's like that too and alot of stuff is new except the meter and the wiring. Messed up.

Ok, forget those old cheap broken $1.00 ammeters . I went back to the flea market and got me a $2.00 (guy originally wanted $3.00), NEW ammeter. Hate to say, still jumps. DARN!!! The flutter seems to come in waves. Still a nervous meter.
Admittedly, the wiring harness is old and somewhat brittle. I don't think it would be that difficult to make up a new one. Or, I may just give up and accept the flutter. Really not all that big a deal. Bill |
Be sure you sg belt is not slipping...
