My 1650 is backfiring from the exhaust....
 

I have searched the forums on this subject, it seams when the timing is off these they usually backfire from the carb. My 1650 is backfiring from the exhaust while running and eventually dies. Funny thing is it starts right back up? Any ideas would be appreciated.

The carb is probably set too lean.

That and possibly a sticky ex. valve.

Won't that lean it out further?

Give it a try and see what the results are.Most times you need to start at a baseline.Here is a chart that shows what yours is.

You need to turn the main screw out, not the idle screw. The idle is adjusted after the main.

I was looking at my carb and it only has two screws on it, they are both on the side of the carb. Which one is the main screw? On my old JD 112 there were three screws and the main screw was on the top and the idle screws were on the sides.

If you don't know where they are, look in your Kohler manual. The main screw is the larger one on top, and the idle is at an angle on the right side. If there's one on the body of the carb down towards the bowl, it's a Walbro, and you're probably SOL as far as adjusting it.
