Model 72 transmission shifting issues
 

The transmission has started to shift extremely difficultly between gears. My assumption is that the clutch is not releasing completely although from neutral it goes into gear cleanly. As a starter, how is the clutch adjusted? I tried the directions in the manual but it didn't make any difference. For the clutch to release more do you turn the adjustment nut clockwise or counterclockwise?

These trans where not made to shift rolling. If it shifts fine from neutral to any gear that all that is needed. If you try to shift say from 1st to 2nd rolling your going to grind. What weight trans oil are you using? Has it been harder to shift since it got colder?

I agree with your rolling comment. What I meant was if the trans is in first gear and I want to put it in reverse the shifter doesn't move without really yanking on it (or move between any of the gears). That's why I think that the clutch is not fully disengaging.

Is it grinding or just difficult to get into gear? If it doesn't grind, it's not the clutch.

Sounds like you need to pull the shifter off and see if the forks are bent/loose/broken/rusty or the shifter itself could have problems.

So your saying it's hard to pull the shifter out of get? Does it feel like the tractor still wants to roll in gear with your foot on the clutch? If so the clutch is not releasing all the way. How is the upper pivot? They also tend to wear out. If it's dosen't roll in gear it's probaly a bent shifter rod .

Thanks for all of your help. Adjusting the clutch and adding a half quart of oil to the tranny helped although not completely. Note to file: check the tranny oil more often.
