new guy, old cub

hello, i'm new here. looking for a forum to discuss my cub related issues. i have several cubs: 2166, 2135, and my beloved cub 149.

i was wondering if anyone here has swapped their kohler 14 hp with a more modern motor. what was your experience, was it worth it, what did you throw in there? i really like my old 149. it just blew out the rear oil seal behind the flywheel while plowing this morning. i would be very interested in member advice. motor runs great, but it's now a road oiler. thinking that i would be better off pulling motor and fixing leak. how big a job is this on the 149 kohler 14?

Looks like Bill has you going in the right direction on replacing your oil seal. Looking forward to your pics once your stop the oil.

Make sure you use a Kohler seal when you replace the seal. The ebay and stens gasket kits have a poor quality oil seal in their gasket kits.

I would keep the old Kohler motor in your Cub. The new modern motors don't make the power the old Kohlers do. The horse power ratings were change several years ago.

I can't speak for swapping out the seal, but I can definitely vouch on the power issue. I've got a 127 w/the 12HP Kohler and I'd put it up against my GT2544 w/22HP Kohler Command any day of the week. Heck after seeing what these guys do with their Originals and the 7HP I wish I had the attachments to give mine a workout like they do.

staying with the old kohler.

swaping a seal doesn't sound so bad. just a lot of digging. i agree with the comments about torque and power. my newer cubs don't even compare, and were a waste of $. bought my 149 off of craigslist. i have a front blade, 32 tiller, brinly plows, 50 inch deck, several sets of tires for it, including weighted ag tires, chains and wheel weights. i had a snow blower but sold it....on craigslist. i love the old 149. it's a beast. thinking about getting a 1450, or a 1650.

WELCOME! I'm with Wild Bill on the quick repair. Nothing no sweeter than a un-molested tractor.
