Who has tried the wrong gearbox, what results?
I know my 122, and 124 well. I have all the implements. I've been over everything many times. No newbie here.
I have a box of thrower parts and it came with several gearboxes. I know we've had this conversation many times, but I need to have it again. The final rpm of a QA thrower with the correct gearbox (2:1) is 900 @ 3600 engine rpm. The output pulley of the tiller gearbox (1.5:1) is 1600rpm. (not at the huge pulley) I find that tilling with the engine at 3/4 throttle works best. So, I was thinking to put a 2:1 box in the rear. And I read a post where someone replaced the 4" input pulley on the front box with a 3.5", and it works better, and never clogs even in wet snow. So, with a tiller box of 1.5:1 gears, a thrower will have 1200 auger rpm, instead of 900. And, a tiller with a thrower gearbox would change the output pulley rpm from 1600, to a more relaxed 1067ish. This makes sense to me. Who has tried either of these combinations of boxes and implements, and what have you found? |
I used a tiller 1.5 to 1 gear box on my thrower a while back, until I was able to find a gear for the correct, 2 to 1 box.
I found it was a bit too fast, so I went to a smaller drive sprocket on the jack shaft and it worked well, (seems like it was 1 tooth less) There is a mention of it while I was answering another’s question on the same subject if you care to do a search of my posts maybe a year ago or so. |
