Anyway to test a keyswitch to make sure it works before you install it?

Just the basic three prong one.

This diagram is basic and typical of the 3 terminal switch.

B = Battery or the Common terminal
S = Start terminal and is a Momentary Contact action - Normally open until the spring loaded action is engaged.
I = Igntion or Run Terminal.

Off position = No contact between any terminal(s).
On position = Contact between B & I only
Start position = Contact between B & I and B & S
