My Original has both the recoil and electric start. Long story short, my Grandfather bought it new with just the recoil, but Grandma had a hard time pulling it, so soon after he took it back to the dealer and had them add the starter/generator. I realize it's much simpler to do on an Original, with the recoil at the rear of the engine.
But the S/G has always had a difficult time starting the tractor. My uncle tells me it's always been like that, since new. I have a theory that the S/G just doesn't spin the motor fast enough when running just the magneto ignition. It turns over at about the same RPM as my 102, but everything's got to be just right for it to fire, choke, throttle, etc, especially when hot. It'll pop right over on the first or second pull of the recoil.
