After you finish de-rusting the pans, I would build a nice hot hardwood fire and get a deep bed of coals. Place and completely cover the pans and let the fire go out by itself ( NO water or the cast iron will crack ). The next day remove the pans, brush off the ash and put some cooking oil on them to keep them from rusting. Season for cooking.
The high heat will remove any left over "stuff" and any seasoning that may be left. I would NOT use them without doing this.
