I don't have much experience with them and I don't know what kind of results you will get running without it.

The Ball, is a simple ball bearing, though I have never looked to buy a single ball bearing, it shouldn't be too hard to find. Some of our sponsors may have them, your local Cub dealer may be able to get one, or your local bearing house. The ball fit's inside the "cup", it isn't tight by any means but it fills the entire hole.
