corrosion
I have had problems like the ones you described and it was almost always corrosion on a terminal. Once it was not even visible to my eyes but only when I wiggled it did it work. That is the easiest and cheapest fix to try first. Then if that doesn't do it go to the more exotic and costly repairs. A cheap little volt meter will help you with most of the testing necessary.
