Default primer looks glossy!

Hi all did some priming yesterday and I used vansickle flat gray primer mixed 8:1 like it said on the can. It said to use naptha or high grade mineral spirits so I thought thinner would be fine, well it looks like gloss ford gray! Did I mess up by using paint thinner instead of naptha? Can this be sanded down once it cures and painted over with a top coat,or what? Any help or thoughts on this would be very much appreciated . Thanks in advance,Brian
