Well, for me it's about how many coats of paint I will be using to cover the primer. I use a primer sealer, a red oil base [ try to ] , and the Cub Cadet paint. Some prep work I seen had the light gray primer before paint,.covers with less paint. I myself dont mind the extra paint required to cover the red primer, ie: like what the factory used on the IH Cub Cadet line.
