Matt I'm not sure how hygroscopic gasoline is , however if I'm not bad mistaken it's used in spark plug boots as well which would also seem to be a problem... maybe I'm wrong here.

It's pretty much petroleum jelly, and it my thinking was to provide a protective coating. I done a search and your correct Vaseline is hygroscopic, as is all petroleum based products.. However I have used Vaseline for years like this and it does prefent oxidation.
