Yeah your right, I was just throwing out options.

I would be tempted to take a piece of 1/4" sheet aluminum, scribe that hole on it (the one the rod made in the case), cut it to fit, then take it and have it TIG welded shut.

Thats what I should have done with mine, but mine is a series II.
