The OP said the PO told him there was a charging problem. So I mentioned the rectifier may be at fault there.

The no start problem may be due to a bad spark plug.

I was addressing both issues in one paragraph and should have split them up.

I agree, he needs to visually check and see if there is actually no spark.

Only getting 8 volts when cranking could be due to corrosion on the connections. Could also be a bad battery. You might take it to your parts store and have it load tested.

Have you replaced the points and cleaned the contacts yet? Also a new condensor would be a good idea and when you install that clean the mounting surfaces with a wire brush to get good ground there too. Shoot, maybe the plug wire is burnt into.

There is so much that could be at fault, but is probably just one little thing.
