My 1450's condensor wire was coming loose and did something very similar. I found it when it was running and I just started wiggling wires. Pulled the wire right out of the condensor and it died. I had a good one on the shelf and it got me mowing again.
Put a new condensor on there, but make sure the ground is good for it when you do.
