First off, DO NOT use ether on a Kubota engine! Make a habit out of that, and you'll crack the head.

The glow plugs are what makes the ammeter peg to the discharge side. If you have 12V at the solenoid with the key in the start position the solenoid is bad. Can you hear the solenoid clicking when you turn the key to start?

Be careful- I had the starter go bad on my 782D, and something in the solenoid was malfunctioning and causing it to draw a lot of current, which fried the keyswitch.
