You can try putting a sealer like prematex or simular ( I have used pipe dope)
on the leaking bolt thread.
If it stops, you found the problem, if not no harm done.
I second the thought of not going tighter on the bolts.
You can crack the casting area bolt boss, and or strip the threads and or "pucker" the cover around the bolt head causing a bigger leak.

You mention using pipe dope and no harm no foul. Pipe dope is actually a lubricant for tapered threads. When used on a straight thread like the bolt holes in the rear housing you can easily over tighten them due to the lubricant if not using a torque wrench.
