It sounds like you fixed it!
On my digital meter, an open circuit shows 0L. I don't know why. But a short reads 0.
I'd rather use an analog sometimes. If your meter has a setting that sounds a tone when the meter shows a short, then it will not make any noise when there is an open circuit.
