A few years back I has a K321AQS (14hp) totally rebuilt.
Machining: Bore .020" over, turn crank .010" under, new valve guides, grind/lap valves, deck block, true head.
New Parts: Rod, piston, rings, valves, valve springs, keepers, points, all gaskets (all Kohler parts)
Assembled to a short block done at the shop.
Total cost: $585
I would have a tough time paying $600 just for the machining on a 'stock' single cylinder engine..........
