I don't see why not, I'd tuck a wet rag down around the shaft to keep it cool and tack it on with a mig welder. I've seen cub dealers weld 1/4" key stock on both side's of the spring for a quick fix. Either way works, Key stock is inexpensive and any hardware or auto parts store carry's it. Just keep the shaft cool with a wet rag.
