Yeah........you're gonna want to pull that completely apart eventually. Cub trannies are very simple to pull apart, and gears are readily available...not trying to tell you what to do, but you're gonna do more damage than you think by running it in that kinda shape. Ask me how I know with a 61 Original.

If you do pull it apart...pull the slider shaft out of the tranny and clean it up very well. It sounds like to me that you either have rust or hard sludge formed on the slider shaft in front of the 2nd/3rd slider gear...OR you have dirt or rust in one side of the shifting fork rail on the transmission casting.
