If the 5/8" belt fits all the way into the groove, it's a 5/8" pulley. There is a huge difference in size between the two widths...what's the width of the groove in the thrower pulley? You *might* be able to use a 1/2" belt, but I wouldn't count on it. The PTO clutch pulley is substantially wider than 5/8".

Actually, if you can post a picture of the thrower pulley, I could probably tell by eye what it is.

You might be able to shim it, but you'll need to figure out a way to do it so you can still adjust the belt tension.
