Ok... are you talking about the hand pump at the base of the steering column? If you are, no. Don't do anything to it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. When I worked for IH the only real problem I ever saw with them was they started leaking. Same pretty well goes on the big IH tractors. It's not very often at all that the hand pump had to be replaced. I still work on lots of old tractors with the original pump. As far as a warning before going... Like I said, usually they just leak. If you have never had a hand pump apart, they are kind of complicated. The internal rotor has to be timed. If it isn't right they don't work. And when I say don't work, I mean you put it back on and start the engine and the steering wheel will "power" right out of your hand one direction or the other till it hits the stops and sit under load till you shut it off. I'm not saying that they can't be rebuilt.... Just saying it really isn't something that you want to tear apart "just because" If it isn't leaking...... I wouldn't touch it!
