Default Hard starting k301

My newly rebuilt k301 has about 20hrs on it. I rebuilt it properly with full spec/machining of block, new guts, etc. It was running like a top until recently then started giving me a hard time starting. It would turn over and try to catch but then spit atomized fuel out of the carb. Eventually after about 5 min of playing with the throttle/choke it would finally catch and run well. Carb is adjusted properly, carb is getting fuel, coil/condenser check out, timing is right on the "S" mark, plug gapped correctly/getting good spark. I'm wondering what else should be considered. Is it possible that the valves need to be readjusted after breaking in?
