I use mulch compost for weed control,($2 per bag at Lowes) it works great and gives the plants some much needed nutrients. As for the birds the neighbor has a pair of stoic looking owls that fends them, mice and the occasional squirrel off. His garden is barely 5' from mine. As for "fruits" of our labor we got snow peas a few weeks back, red and white potatoes yesterday. Oh and two tiny tomatoes...
