I would have thought it not difficult to buy just the plug. You can for all of the MTD line I thought. The blades you buy the mulching brand of your choice and there are some very "wicked" ones out there. You would just buy the correct length and the correct mounting pilot for the spindles.
I believe the last I bought were Gator by Oregon blades but I don't recall which. There's a G3 and a G5 I believe.
