Nice job! I'd be a bit concerned about wearing out the C channel given the tension on the joint. A stud and 2 nuts in there carefully backed out (to expand the "C" might have allowed you to sneak up on it some.

OTOH with .030 play I'd probably have never picked up a wrench. My poor O is probably more like .3"
