Odds are something is leaking on your 1450. It doesn't take much of a leak to have a gas smell. Besides the gas gauge several places to look is the rubber groment where the fuel shut off valve goes into the tank, shut off valve itself, fuel line and float in carb.

I never heard of a gas gauge that shouldn't be used with E-10. I'd find me a different parts supplier.
