Default 14HP starter rebuild rebuild

The starter on my 1450 is shot. Wouldn't spin with a direct hookup to the battery. I took it apart and two of the brushes are gone. It has lots of crud inside. The magnets look good with no breaks or chips. The area that the brushes ride on are wore. I was thinking that I could take the armature into work and have that area faced off in a lathe to true it up, what do you think? What should I use to clean it up inside and out, brake cleaner? How hard are they to rebuild? I see some places that sell repair parts for these. Can it be done or should I take it somewhere, or just buy an aftermarket? Thanks in advance for the advice and info.
