Looks like hickory nuts to me. My back yard is filled with shagbark hickory trees and the ground will soon be covered with them. The nuts are edible and taste a lot like pecans or walnuts to me. I used to rake them up in the spring before I mow the first time to keep from pelting my house with them. Now, I just roll the yard when the ground is soft and push them below the reach of the mower blades. The squirrels just have to work a little harder to retrieve them.

The meat is tough to get out of the shell because they are so stinking hard. There's a reason they make hammer handles from hickory and the nut shells are just as tough. You're better of buying walnuts or pecans at the store.
