2284 Running Rough
Hey fellas -
I was helping a friend of mine work on his 2284. He's had problems with it running rough, running very rich and stalling out randomly. This machine is also very loud, I'd guess 30% louder than my 2072 with the Magnum 20 in it.
To combat the running too rich problem we put two new O rings in the tube in the carb, they were tiny and really dry rotted. The rest of the carb appeared to be in good shape and the molded O ring gasket between the two halves was in excellent shape. We also checked the fuel shutoff solenoid and that was very clean and worked without issues when bench testing.
It runs quite a bit better but still randomly shuts off.
To combat the loudness we installed new exhaust gaskets and reassembled. This made no noticeable difference. I ran it around for a few minutes tonight after getting it mostly back together and noticed something that i think is not right. The T section in the second image where the weld is was red hot. This was after maybe 10 minutes. I looked up the part on parts tree and they show a different style for the muffler (6).
My friend told me that when he bought the tractor they had replaced the muffler with a used muffler within the past year or so. This used muffler seems very loud and i don't think it should get red hot where the tube sections are welded to the can. It almost looks as if the tube is smaller there than where it comes out of the heads and right next to the can.
Questions:
1) Am i correct that the muffler should not be red hot at the T section?
2) It still randomly shuts off. It will start right back up. I suspected the fuel shutoff solenoid because of what i read on here previously but that looked to be in really good shape as i stated above. Could it be the muffler?
3) Which muffler is correct for this machine? Is the parts tree picture wrong for some reason?
Thanks for your help in advance.
