No you can't clean them, and although it sounds like a plugged or bad muffler, it may not be causing the issue. It may just be old and the metal thin at the "T" which will heat faster. If the muffler is plugged, it won't just up and die, it will gradually slow down, and then might die. Also, it will be VERY low on power. Sounds like the muffler is bad anyway. Take it off and see if it dies with no muffler on it. Partstree is correct BTW.
