The bowl should fill on it's own. No need to loosen fittings. The carb bowl is vented. If it doesn't fill on it's own, either the vent is somehow plugged. (It's a HUGE vent hole I have no idea how it would plug, unless you used the incorrect bowl gasket.) Or the float valve is stuck. Tap on the carb lightly with a screwdriver handle.
