Apple isn't known for producing "bad" cables and in fact the reputation is usually the opposite (stupid/expensive cables, but quality). It's probably something about how its being used that is causing them to fail so quickly.

Have you considering permanently (well, sort of... something like a drop or two of hot glue) attaching the cable to the connector, coiling up the wire and sticking it on the back, and then just use a USB extension cable to plug it in?

My fear would be without correcting the behavior or just permanently attaching the cable you'll eventually break the port on the tablet.
