The only success I've ever had is mechanical removal. 3M scotchbrite grade "VFN" (very fine) roloc wheels will buzz it right off and won't take the rubber if you're quick.

It may just be my poor luck that most of the above suggestions haven't worked for me. Sandblasting DOES work but has obvious down sides.
