Your Buddy is correct.
The 882 was a CCC built product. It had an Aluminum Rear End. The Sleeve Hitch on the 149 was designed for the Cast Iron Rear End of the IH built Cubs. Thus, the Sleeve Hicth from the 149 will NOT work for the 882.
There are two solutions for installing a Sleeve Hitch on your 882.
(A) Custom fabricate a beefed up bracket, or
(B) Obtain the following Adapter Packages.....for the 882, one would use 190-389
