I didnt see it mentioned, but sam usually drills drain back holes in the rear end case from the axle tubes. You just as well do that, because a machine with that many hours is sure to have lotsa water in the tubes by now. Not good during the freezing weather.
Dad and I did it to his 1864 and it was rather simple. Use new grade 8 bolts, new axle tube gaskets and some high grade rtv silicon for re assembly, install the rear end braces and you should be good for a gob of hours.
