By all means take the tunnel cover off and check the trunion for wear, misalignment and it's movement, I would if it were mine, especially if you feel there is any kind of possible danger to yourself or others.
However the OP clearly states that he isn't experiencing any problems on level ground (apparently no hydro creep or run away) and he doesn't even hint at any kind of lurch or other erratic behavior.
Other than these basic problems, what else is there?
