I went out and checked and both pulleys are fine. The belt is partially shredded but still not broken. Maybe the noise I heard was the mule drive pulley rubbing the front of the mule drive when the belt popped off. I wear nice hearing protection so it's hard to tell exactly what I heard. To me it looks like the center deck spindle leans forward at the top but it's possible that it's an optical illusion or it's always been that way and I've just never noticed. I can put my finger between the deck and pulley at the rear side but not at the front side.
