Sounds like you may have a stuck valve. Typically, the exhaust valve hangs up since it is the hottest.
That's where I'd start if I didn't have compression.
Also, go easy on the starting fluid. A quick shot of raw gas down the spark plug hole, or through the carb is a better way.
