That doesn't make any sense. The engine has nothing to do with a mechanical brake. I'd say the hrdrostat needs the linkage set so that it goes to neutral when the brake is set.
On another note..... what were you doing with it that you found this out? Just trying to use the parking brake? Or were you trying to drive it using the brake like a clutch?
