Cody, the Data Plate doesn't lie. 149711100 is a 1989 Model 1772.
149 = Garden or Super Garden Tractor built in 1989
711 = factory code for a 1772
100 = sold by a Cub Cadet Dealer.
The Serial number 787251 falls within the range of 1989 Serial numbers 779,097-799,99.
I don't know about what's written in the manual but this unit was not purchased in 1986, three years before it was manufactured.
