I ran a #2 tiller on a 149 for years. Dad bought a 129 brand new back in 1974 with #2 tiller and still uses it. Neither had the belt guide and we never had any problems. So I wouldn't worry about it. They did have different belt guides, though. One for a gear drive, one for a hydro. FYI.
