the pic's i put up are of the spot that looks like it rotted away. i didn't take the motor apart, just removed it and cleaned/painted. it runs very well, and idles well when i have my finger on the throttle shaft. the linkage between the throttle shaft and governor arm is pretty loose. i will tighten that up tomorrow and see if it helps. it seems i may have been a little vague on my first post, which i apologize for. i hold the throttle shaft at idle with my thumb, and once i take my thumb off it moves to WOT on it's own and doesn't return to idle. i think tightening that linkage between the carb and governor will help. it is a ball and socket deal on the carb side and is quite loose.
