I believe that different tachs are triggered by different means. Some like a timing light, “inductive tachs” may be listed as being for 2,4,6 or 8 cylinder engines but may, ( Please correct me if I'm wrong here) be used in other cylinder configurations, like single cylinder, as long as it is being triggered from the proper source.

I'm going to look into this Mercury outboard voltage regulator with the built in tach circuitry.
