Not to say your 50+ year old generator isn't crapping out, but what is the condition of your battery cables? If you have a bad cable/connection/ground somwhere it can operate as you describe. You can bypass the wiring harness with jumper cables. Be sure it's in neutral, key off. Jumper cable ground to the engine block, touch the positive jumper cable to the generator terminal with the heavy battery cable connected. IT WILL SPARK, be careful. If it spins normal, you have a bad cable/connection. If it's still sluggish it's the generator. If it were mine, I'd find a local automotive electrical company to rebuild it vs buying a new one.
