I had an 800 with a 44A and it was fine as long as the grass wasn't tall. On the 38s, the outer blades have to spin REALLY fast since the blades are so short, and they pull harder than the larger decks as a result. The 800 handled the 44" deck a bit better than the 86 I had handled the 38" deck. The 800 was also a pretty fresh rebuild, but still...I think as long as the engine is in decent shape it'd work ok.
