What Sam said. The most accurate reading will be from the oil in the sump. On the Mag18, the side plug would be my choice, it is protected from the drive belts and should be far enough away from getting in the way of any rotating internals (check first). Where that plug is on my 2082 I would have to lift the engine up to get the plug out and install the temperature bulb. On the Vanguard in the 1641 it looks like the plug near the oil filter should work.
